S1/2 and S2/3 (Mr Nelson and Mr Slowey’s years)

- View the presentation about Black Lives Matter and start a discussion in your house about some of the points raised.

As we come to the end of this school year, we wanted to leave you with something to think about. As you will know, the killing of George Floyd in the United States has provoked worldwide discussion, debate and protest about the injustice, discrimination and inequality faced by Black, Asian and minority ethnic people (shortened to BAME).

The presentation is here. It discusses:

Why Black Lives Matter exists and the death of George Floyd
Black Lives Matter in Scotland – our role in slavery and injustices of today
Issues with racism with some of the authors and texts in English Literature
Examples of how language can be used effectively to change people’s views
What you can do to be anti-racist

Once you have viewed the presentation, reflect on how it has affected your own views. The best way to reflect is often to have a meaningful discussion with others. Speak to your siblings, friends and other family members about what you’ve learned. You might want to view the presentation a few times, perhaps with other people.

- Daily reading for pleasure of at least twenty minutes. You should consider keeping a daily reading log. You should also consider daily reading reflection tasks, responding to the following questions:

1. What do you like or dislike about this book/chapter/character/plot/setting? Why?

2. What puzzles or confuses you right now about your text? Why?

3. Can you connect what's happening right now with something that has happened in your own life, has happened in the world, or is in another text?

The Oystercatcher Newspaper - our school's student publication - is relaunching as an online platform in the next few weeks. We are looking for budding journalists, or those with an interest in the world around them, to create content for the site. No previous experience is required! If you are interested, please join the Google Classroom with the following invite code: by2u7sn.

- Pupils should access the SCHOLAR online resource, where possible. SCHOLAR is an excellent website, designed to prepare pupils for National 5 and Higher English. This includes quizzes, course content and reviews. The RUAE (Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation) section is particularly useful during school closure. Sharing books and reading is a great way to make the most of time spent at home. Browse Scottish Book Trust's home activities hub to find resources for your home classroom, entertaining author events to watch online, and stories to share together.

Suggestion: Go to Scottish Book Trust. Watch the Authors Live sessions. Consider entering the Scots story competition or having a go at some of the writing tasks.
